The Vietnam War
The Vietnam war began after North and South Vietnam gained their freedom from France, and North Vietnam wanted to spread their communism to the democratic South Vietnam. This caused tension between North and South Vietnam, causing a civil war to break out. America, believing in decreasing the spread of communism, aided Southern Vietnam by giving them resources however, America chose to stay out of any combat. Until 1965 when North Vietnam bombed U.S. Navy ships, causing America to send soldiers to Southern Vietnam to aid them in their battle against Northern Vietnam. The war lasted about 20 years with lots of casualties on both sides. President Nixon adapted Vietnamization which meant that he wanted to remove all U.S. combat troops from Vietnam. By the end of his term, Nixon was able to get all U.S. combat troops out of Vietnam, however a few military and Marine officers chose to stay.
